Single layer Vs Two layer Crown – Which is better & Why?

Zirconia Crowns (commonly known as All Ceramic Crown) are called single layer crowns as they are made from zirconium dioxide only. This material is light in weight and highly durable. These crowns remain free of chipping or fracture due to chewing loads. Zirconia crowns require minimal removal of existing tooth structure, hence they are more conservative. Another advantage of these single layer/ all ceramic crowns is superior shade matching with the neighboring teeth.

There is another type of crown called Metal-Ceramic Crown. In these sort of crowns a layer of porcelain is fused on top of a metal base, thus these are two layered crowns which are thicker and heavier. As there is a fusion of two part, in case of any inadvertent chewing force the upper porcelain layer may chip out leaving it’s inner metal part visible.
Therefore, except a few situations the single layer all ceramic crowns are better option than the metal-ceramic crowns.
